DITI-
(Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging or Thermography) is a noninvasive
diagnostic technique that allows the examiner to visualise and quantify
changes in skin surface temperature. An infrared scanning device
is used to convert infrared radiation emitted from the skin surface
into electrical impulses that are visualised in color on a monitor.
This visual image graphically maps the body temperature and is referred
to as a thermogram. The spectrum of colors indicate an increase
or decrease in the amount of infrared radiation (INFLAMMATION) being
emitted from the body surface. Since there is a high degree of thermal
symmetry in the normal body, subtle abnormal temperature asymmetry's
can be easily identified.
Clinical
uses for DITI include;
To
define the extent of a lesion of which a diagnosis has previously
been made;
To
localise an abnormal area not previously identified, so further
diagnostic tests can be performed;
To
detect early lesions before they are clinically evident;
To
monitor the healing process before the patient is returned to work
or training.
Pain
Thermography
DITI's
unique ability to see hotspots (heat and inflammation) in the body
can differentiate between local or referred pain. For example, if
your elbow or wrist was in pain, you would tell your healthcare provider
where it hurt and they would usually treat the area of complaint.
Thermography can take a thermal picture to see if the area was indeed
inflamed- or if the pain is referred from a different part of the
body, such as the neck or shoulder. Typical thermal images detect
carpal tunnel, brachial plexus entrapment, arthritis, neck pain, back
pain, joint pain. By being able to see your pain, your provider can
treat you better!
Diti
can also aid in the detection of: fibromyalgia, TMJ, thyroid concerns,
lymph congestion, phlebitis, sinus troubles, dental pathology, RSD.
Diti
is also an extremely valuable tool to detect breast pathology. For
