Chemical Dependency
The method of using acupuncture on specific sights for this purpose, was first used throughout Asia to cure smoking Opium addiction. Dr. Rapkin has developed his system of quitting smoking over years as a coach and acupuncturist treating patients in outpatient and residential programs. Originally, Dr. Rapkin applied acupuncture to addicts withdrawing from smoking crack cocaine. The results were amazing. Eighty-five percent of the participants were successful in stopping their habit.
The methodology was expanded to anyone with a chemical dependency problem including smoking, drinking alcohol, heroin and prescription drug addictions.
How does acupuncture work?
The brain is in charge of every function in the body. Deep within the brain lies the hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal axis. The hypothalamus is in charge of the major survival systems. The nervous system, endocrine system, immune system and cardiovascular systems are all regulated by the hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal axis.
When acupuncture is applied it sends an efferent message directly to the center of the brain through the peripheral nervous system. Immediately the hypothalamus responds with an afferent, or outgoing message, which modifies activity throughout the brain and the body. Changing the brain activity means releasing chemicals from the brain that regulate and influence our thinking, feelings and behaviors. This is how acupuncture reduces and eliminates cravings, anxiety, tension and stress.
